Class Description

Description

This comprehensive one-day studio lighting course serves as an essential introduction to the art and technique of portrait lighting within a controlled studio environment. Participants will not only master the technical operation of professional lighting equipment, but also explore the critical relationship between exceptional lighting, thoughtful composition, and careful styling in creating successful portraits. You'll discover advanced techniques that help photographers connect authentically with their subjects and reveal their essential character.

The day opens with an in-depth discussion and practical demonstration examining the qualities of light itself. We'll explore what makes light sources soft versus hard, and which qualities work best for different portrait situations. You'll learn specific lighting strategies for flattering various skin tones, creating catchlights in the eyes, and controlling the appearance of hair.

Throughout the day, you'll experiment with various assignments that teach you how to create and control an extensive range of light qualities. We'll explore basic light modifiers, including softboxes, umbrellas, beauty dishes, and grids, with a detailed discussion of the strengths and limitations of each tool. The seminar also addresses how light functions within a photograph to establish mood, create depth and dimension, and add texture. You'll analyze examples of successful portraits by legendary and contemporary photographers, drawing inspiration from their approach to lighting.

Following lectures and demonstrations, you'll work directly with professional models in the afternoon session, applying your newfound knowledge in real-world conditions. All lighting equipment will be provided for your use during the class.

Materials: You are encouraged to bring your own digital single lens reflex (DSLR) or mirrorless camera equipped with a hot shoe or sync connection to practice with your personal equipment.

Skill and Experience Level: Participants should have a basic working knowledge of their camera and understand its fundamental settings. No prior lighting experience is necessary to benefit from this course.
