  • Your World Premiere at the Comedy Store Stand-Up

There's very little teaching that goes on in this class. For example at the end of the second class where we've learned how to write a joke but nothing about how to perform it, the teacher says "You should be going to open mic nights" and then suggests we go to the one he runs that has an admission charge. It's kind of excusable except for the part where after the third class you discover that the whole thing is just a funnel for a pay-to-play scheme in the Belly Room on a Sunday night. The teacher repeatedly makes a point of harassing the students to sell tickets to their friends and family. Additionally the teachers methodology runs counterpoint to literally every other text or instructional video on stand up comedy that I've ever read or seen. This may explain why his career was not as successful as that of his peers. You really have to take what he says in perspective, and there is some wisdom there but it's not five weeks' worth. Also unmentioned is that when there's an event taking place at the Staples Center, this class becomes nearly impossible to get to in a reasonable amount of time. It was a fun experience, but wasn't really what was advertised.
