Class Description

Description

American Bartender’s School 40-hour, full-certification bartending course is designed to fully prepare you for a bartending job in NYC. This bartender course will give you the tools to get a job in an industry that is booming.

You will learn the following:

1. Bar Set-Up

  • Students of the bartender course are first introduced to the wet bar. A “wet bar” differs from a regular bar in that it is equipped with a sink with running water.
  • Next, you are taught how to set up your bar. Every bartender needs to know the standard set up of a bar as many bars follow similar practices.
  • Since you are working with liquids in this bartender course, the cleanup and break down of the bar is also discussed. Learning the correct breakdown and clean up will keep things sanitary at your bartending job. Taking care of wet materials to eliminate germs, prevent mold, and general upkeep of things like bar mats are also discussed.
2. Mixology: Drinks and Cocktails
  • As part of the bartender course, you will be taught to mix and serve the six major classifications of drinks most commonly offered today. The classes of drink are liquor and mixed drinks, such as a Manhattan. You will also learn juice drinks. These drinks include bar favorites like the Screwdriver, Madras, or the Seabreeze. Next, you learn about martini-style cocktails. You may think that these are only useful at higher class establishments, but these days you will find these drinks being ordered everywhere from restaurants to clubs to small cocktail bars.
  • Another classification of drink in this bartender course is the two-liquor drink. These are important for your bartending career and very popular among customers. Next, are shooters. Shooters include any drink that is taken in a shot glass. These are extremely popular for young people who are out to have some fun at a bar. Last, are drinks known as sours. The most popular among these are the Sidecar or the Margarita.
3. Beer and Wine Basics
  • We also teach all about beer and wine in the bartender course. We discuss the regions and specific tastes that are characteristic of those regions. We go into the wine-making process so that you understand what makes wine unique. The more knowledgeable you are about such details of what you are serving, the more the customer will enjoy his/her experience. T
  • Craft beer is booming in the USA. There are over 20 craft breweries in NYC alone. We talk about the different types of beers and how to distinguish the flavor and color. Each brewery makes their beer slightly different, using different ingredients or techniques.
4. Customer Service and Increasing Tips
  • Aside from learning the intricacies of making cocktails in the bartender course, you will be learning about how to make something else that is just as important…money! Bartenders can make up to $250-300 per night in tips at a normal bar. We even have some scientific ways of increasing tips while bartending.
  • You will also learn about upselling a customer when bartending. This is the idea of offering food with a drink or suggesting a higher shelf brand of liquor. The idea is to increase the profit of the bar.
  • Regular customers are a bartender’s best friend. Our bartender course teaches you how to interact with customers in the right way. The more value you can bring to a bar, the more value you have as an employee.
5. Beer, Liquor and Wine History & Production
  • Students will learn the production processes of beer, liquors, and wines from across the globe. These facts make you a more knowledgeable bartender, thus a more valuable bartender for a bar manager to hire. Knowing the difference between a bourbon and a whiskey is something that may set you apart from someone else being considered for the job. All of these things go a long way towards enhancing your career in the industry.
6. The Laws
  • The Alcohol Beverage Control Laws are created by New York State. These are laws that every bartender has to know. After Prohibition was repealed in 1933, New York enacted the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law, which created the State Liquor Authority and the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control .
  • You will also learn important NYC Sanitation laws that will help keep your bar up to code and out of legal trouble.
7. Interview and Resume Skills
  • Each graduate of American Bartenders School gets job placement assistance. This means that our job placement team works with you to perfect your resume and ready you for your upcoming job interviews. Having the right keywords on your resume can make all the difference to a potential employer. The job placement team helps you present your skills to an employer in the best way possible.
8. Job Board and Lifetime Refresher
  • Each graduate gets special access to our job board, updated with fresh jobs leads everyday. A special password-protected job board is opened on our website for graduates to peruse at anytime. With over 1000 bars and restaurants nationwide, American Bartenders School’s network is vast and provides graduates with excellent opportunities right out of school.
  • American Bartenders School graduates also get lifetime access to the facility for practicing bartending skills. If, for instance, a graduate comes back to bartending after a few years doing something else, he/she can come into the school and refresh their skills at anytime.
9. Getting the most out of your job
  • By the end of the course, you will know everything there is to get started in the industry. You will learn how to have fun at work, meet hundreds of thousands of people, and make long-lasting friendships with co-workers or customers. Bartending builds leadership and character, as well as these other 13 life skills that you will learn as a bartender.
