Class Description

Description

From dry, unmanageable locks to dull, damaged hair, this class will save you money on expensive, ineffective haircare products and point you in the right direction of effective, natural ingredients to make your own. Students will learn to effectively make their own products focusing on hair health, damage repair and targeted treatments.

Learn to make your very own natural haircare products in a fun and educational evening workshop with haircare formulator, Marla Bosworth. Marla has been making plant-based haircare products for 24 years. Students will learn formulation recipes and tips for making amazing, natural haircare products suitable for different hair types. This class is for beginner through advanced. There is no prior experience required.

Marla brings these tried and true salon-quality formulas to you in simple explanation and she will discuss in detail formulation guidelines. In this easy to follow, hands-on class we will discuss theory and shampoo and treatment formulation for various hair types. We'll discuss the difference between Asian, African American, Hispanic and Caucasian hair. Next, we’ll discuss the theory of making shampoos and conditioners. Then we’ll formulate hair products:

Clarifying Shampoo

Hair, Roots & Scalp Treatment Serum

Organic Hair Masque/Conditioner

This is a hands-on class and each product will be made from scratch. Students will take home a full-size sample of all three products.

This class covers:

  • Properties of plant oils and butters and how they clean and moisturize the hair.
  • Why we need surfactants and which ones are the most natural.
  • Amphoteric, anionic, cationic and nonionic ingredients and how they relate to haircare.
  • How to create and use herbal infusions, tinctures and decoctions.
  • Which herbs, vitamins, extracts and balancers are available to use when formulating.
  • How to choose and incorporate plant-based essential oils into your haircare products.
  • How to formulate for oily, normal, thin, dry, weak, coarse and color-treated hair types.
  • What the difference is between synthetic, natural & naturally-derived ingredients.
  • Effective natural preservatives.
  • Packaging options.
  • Labeling requirements.
  • Recommended suppliers.

Bio: Marla Bosworth is the CEO of Back Porch Soap Company. She has been creating plant-based beauty products for 25 years.
