About NYC Jewelry Lab by Carolina Iwanow

NYC Jewelry Lab by Carolina Iwanow offers jewelry classes and workshops that enable the students to explore and develop their inherent creativity as well as technical aspects of the craft.

Metalsmithing is a very ancient craft that exist since the cave era, metal transformed human life. Beauty and body decoration are indeed a human obsession. Working with precious metals is one of the most versatile and amazing crafts you can ever experience. When you craft metal you deal with art, design, alchemy, mathematics, physics, nature, chemistry and patience. Crafting temples the spirit.

NYC Jewelry Lab is a green Jewelry studio. Carolina is very diligent about crafting jewelry in the safest way. She do not use hazardous chemicals.

At Carolina Iwanow’s classes, students will learn how to design, learn and earn ancient hand crafting skills and understanding modern tools and techniques. From introductory level courses to professional fine jewelry, contemporary jewelry & fashion jewelry, design & metal production. Carolina offers as well a big variety of skilled workshops. Her goal as an instructor is to teach the secrets and techniques of design & jewelry and how to make ideas come to life through one of the most amazing and versatile crafts in this earth: Metalsmithing.

Silabous of the class:

From the very first minute students will learn a design exercise and they will design their own first jewel from scratch ( it can be pendants, earrings, rings) students will learn the characteristics of precious metals and how they behave, they will also learn how to transfer it to metal, how to saw, file, sand, stamp, textured, forge, anneal, solder, clean, use the flex shaft and the polisher machine. For the second exercise student will learn how to carve one or two rings out of wax and then the student will have the amazing experience to outsource their very first wax carving at the wax casting supplier at the Diamond District. For the third exercise the student will learn how to make a fine silver bezel setting pendant, ring or earrings with the option of adding granulation, twisted wire ornaments or a reticulated band. At the end of this five classes the student will have from 3 to 6 pieces ready and this depends on each individual pace, some people is faster some people is slower but Carolina doesn't like the students to rush. Everyone is different and have their own timing and she deeply respects this fact mostly at the beginning of your metalsmithing experience. Carolina's classes are not about how many pieces you will make ( you will make many beautiful ones) they are about how much knowledge, understanding, techniques and practice she will teach you.

Carolina’s classes are very personalized and super hands on.

Highly recommend this class to anyone who is interested in learning how to make jewelry. This was my first time working with metal and Carolina is so knowledgeable, kind, fun, and easy to work with. She really takes the time to teach every student and you can see how passionate she is about the art of jewelry making. You’ll learn many different techniques and walk away with a piece or two that you can wear yourself!

Carolina's class is excellent. It was amazing how much I learned in five classes and how many pieces I was able to make in that time. I knew nothing about ring making when I started, and I left the class with four wonderful, totally handmade rings for myself and my fiance. Carolina gives plenty of instruction, but she also gives you a lot of time to experiment, to design the things you want to make, and to get familiar to the tools. For someone like me, who doesn't appreciate a lot of hand-holding in classes, it was a hugely enjoyable experience. So much of the benefit is having access to a well-equipped workspace. I look forward to signing up for more time in her studio to continue learning and making cool stuff. Highly recommend for anyone curious.

Carolina is a creative tornado! She is fun, direct, knowledgeable, and surprisingly efficient, given the size of the class -- I'm amazed that we were able to make so many lovely things in such a short time! I'm definitely continuing to study with her.

I love Carolina as a teacher. She is so knowledgeable about her craft and her studio is amazing. She also does a great job of catering her teaching to each student and encourages creativity and making the piece you want to make. The only downside to this class is that sometimes she has many students and there are times where students are just waiting in line for their turn to talk to her.
