Class Description

Description

Are German wines limited to sweet Rieslings? Is Eastern European wine dismissed as less sophisticated? Challenge these misconceptions and explore the sophisticated diversity found within some of Europe's most important wine regions.

Germany and Eastern Europe deserve serious attention in any comprehensive study of global wine. The wine traditions of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire reveal fascinating connections while also showcasing distinct regional characteristics. This course examines the diverse wine styles produced across Germany, Austria, Hungary, and neighboring regions, encompassing everything from terroir and climate influences to understanding complex label terminology and the full range of wine styles produced in these areas. You will taste and analyze Spätburgunder, various expressions of Riesling from prestigious vineyards in the Mosel and Rheingau valleys, and other German varietals. From Austria, we will explore the crisp minerality of Grüner Veltliner. You will discover Hungary's celebrated dessert wine tradition through Tokaji and other sweet wines that have gained international recognition.
