In this intensive and immersive crash course, participants will develop a comprehensive understanding of how scent and olfactory experiences can serve as powerful tools for cultural interpretation and meaningful public engagement. Through focused discussion and practical examples, you will learn how to thoughtfully integrate multisensory experiences into exhibitions, educational programs, and public engagement initiatives. The session introduces key theories from sensory anthropology, ethical considerations, and evidence-based design strategies for creating memorable, immersive visitor experiences in GLAM (Gallery, Library, Archive, and Museum) settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the core principles of sensory anthropology and olfactory storytelling techniques
  • Explore the benefits, challenges, and ethical considerations of using scent in cultural programming
  • Learn to design and implement a simple yet effective olfactory concept for exhibitions or educational programs
  • Discover accessible materials and practical diffusion methods to bring scent-based experiences to life

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

Refund Policy

We offer to reschedule as needed 3 business days prior. There are no refunds, as we prepare ingredients and class materials beforehand.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.

In the event that an instructor or the school needs to cancel at the last minute, students will receive a refund less a 5% non-refundable registration fee.
