In this Level 1 class, you will learn how to set up, configure, and post content using WordPress.com. Along the way, you will explore how to personalize a WordPress site using themes and get an introduction to the platform's core settings and publishing features. Some basic familiarity with HTML and CSS is helpful but not required to participate fully in this course.
This class is designed for beginners and those who are new to building websites on WordPress. You will leave with a solid foundation that allows you to confidently create and manage a WordPress site entirely on your own.
What You Will Cover:
- Understanding the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org and when to use each
- Setting up your WordPress.com account and establishing the basic structure of your site
- Navigating the WordPress Dashboard and understanding the layout of the admin interface
- Creating and publishing Pages versus Posts and understanding when to use each
- Working with the Block Editor (Gutenberg) to build and format content
- Selecting and customizing a theme to control the visual appearance of your site
- Adding media: uploading and inserting images, setting featured images, and managing the media library
- Creating navigation menus and organizing your site's structure for visitors
- Managing site settings, including title, tagline, visibility, and basic SEO considerations
- Understanding categories and tags and how to use them to organize your content
- Installing and activating plugins to extend the functionality of your site
- Reviewing best practices for maintaining and updating your site over time

What to Bring:
Please bring a laptop with WiFi capability. A free WordPress.com account is all you need to get started, and you will be guided through the setup process during class if you have not created one already.
This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.
