Class Description

Description

Learn to carve a spoon with hand tools in a day. In this class we will bypass the axing step and zero in on the finer skills of knifing a spoon to its final form. You will work from precut spoon blanks that are roughly shaped from locally sourced woods. This is a great way to learn about grain structure and how to carve wood with traditional hand tools.

We will use traditional edge tools, primarily a Sloyd knife, a hook knife, gouges, and spokeshaves to shape the familiar curves of a spoon. No power tools or loud noises, just the sound of chips and shavings falling to the floor. No experience is necessary.

Essentially a bowl with a handle, the spoon is a three dimensional ride around shifting inside and outside curves. You'll learn a variety of knife grips that get you around the spoon safely and effectively. Spoon carving is a great entry into making sculptural shapes in wood.

Participants will leave with a spoon or two, oiled and ready to be used in the kitchen.
