Learn essential hand tool woodworking skills by constructing a functional footstool that doubles as a step stool. This course teaches fundamental joinery techniques, including half-lap joints, mortise and tenon joints, and stop tenons. Each joint technique is specifically chosen to maximize the strength and integrity of wood, creating pieces that are solid, durable, and long-lasting when joinery is used instead of metal fasteners.
Skills and Techniques:
Throughout the course, you will develop practical woodworking skills applicable across multiple disciplines of the craft. These include proper design and layout fundamentals, accurate marking techniques, proficient hand tool use, safe bandsaw operation, and professional assembly methods. The project-based approach ensures that knowledge directly transfers to future woodworking endeavors.
Course Prerequisites:
This course is designed as a follow-up to either our Foundations of Woodworking: Hand Tools or Foundations of Woodworking: Machine Tools courses. These prerequisite courses provide basic familiarity and practice with the hand and power tools used in this advanced workshop. While extensive woodworking experience is not required, students should have basic knowledge of tool handling. Students with equivalent shop experience and hands-on tool familiarity are also encouraged to apply.
